- Surface shaping / stock removal: 80–120
- Prep before stain or paint: 150–180
- Between-coat and finish prep: 240–320
- Ultra-fine finishing and clearcoat rubout: 400–1000
The general rule: never skip more than one grit step — 80 → 120 → 180 → 220 leaves a finish the next coat can fill, where a big jump leaves scratches that telegraph through.
